Mind Matters – Can We Talk?: Developing Better Communication with Loved Ones
August 26, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Language is one of the most basic tools we have to express how we feel and what we think. Yet most of us don't know how to communicate well, especially with the people with which we have the closest relationships. It's not uncommon for communication problems to increase when people are navigating mental health issues. Join us for an engaging session focused on developing better insight to our communication and addressing some common challenges that impact our relationships: How do we know if we're guilty of poor communication? What are the communication traps that most of us fall into and how can we develop better insight to ensure we are nurturing and not undermining our relationships? How can we feel better about communicating well during conflict? In this presentation, local relationship therapist, Dr. Mathis Kennington, will help participants deepen their understanding of what we need to develop more positive communication with our loved ones.
Dr. Mathis Kennington is a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in couple and sex therapy. Mathis is the current President of the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and co-founder of The Practice ATX, a group private practice in Austin that provides specialized care for behavioral, relational and mental health challenges.
Mind Matters, presented by Ascension Seton, brings mental health experts and advocates together to share information, tools and experience with the goal of advancing our community’s understanding of mental illness and increasing awareness of the resources available.
